THE number of births outside marriage has almost quadrupled over the past 20 years, it emerged today.

The rise - from 12 per cent in 1980 to 42 per cent in 2004 - is largely due to a sharp increase in the number of couples living together without tying the knot, according to the Office for National Statistics' Social Trends annual report.
