The increasing tendency for women to have children outside wedlock was highlighted in an annual snapshot of the UK published yesterday.

The number of births outside marriage has almost quadrupled over the past few decades, according to the Office for National Statistics' Social Trends report.

The rise is from 12% in 1980 to 42% in 2004.
