One side says the only way to preserve the remaining ruts of the old Santa Fe Trail through southwest Kansas is to keep people off the historic tracks, letting visitors view the timeworn cuts in the sod from a safe distance on a new, parallel trail.
The other side says the best way to preserve the traces of the trail is to let people walk in the footsteps of the pioneers, trampling down vegetation that has already consumed an estimated 85 percent of the ruts.
