Philip Carlson, a mathematician and devoted Christian who researched the life of Isaac Newton in England so that he could reconcile science and his faith, died Sunday of complications of Alzheimer's disease and pneumonia in Arden Hills. Carlson, who was a Bethel University math professor for 27 years, was 74.

While a seminary student at what was then Bethel College in St. Paul, Carlson realized that his "calling" was to be a teacher, said his son Tom of Mounds View.
