On 1 February 2002 the Russian Federation's new Labour Code entered into force, marking a further step in the country's process of legislative and institutional reform in the field of labour. This process began in the early 1990s with the break up of the USSR, after seven decades of Soviet rule. Soviet institutions were in fact already being undermined by legislative changes prior to the collapse of the USSR.
