If it's good enough for the Statue of Liberty, it's good enough for us. Apparently 100 tons of baking soda was used to clean Liberty's inner copper walls during its 1986 restoration.

"Sodium bicarbonate, which first hit the mass market in 1846 when Dr. Austin Church and John Dwight began selling their red-labeled soda packages, also is famous for neutralizing odiferous fatty acids, and attacking grease by turning it into _ believe it or not _ soap," says Robert Wolke of the chemistry department at the University of Pittsburgh.
