TURIN, Italy _ In preparation for my first trip to a Winter Olympics, I packed like a man sentenced to a month-long stay in a gulag.

Heavy coat with liner. Two pairs of gloves. Stocking caps. Thermals. Hooded sweatshirts. Packs of wool socks. Waterproof boots.

I stepped off the train in Turin feeling more impregnable to cold than Ralphie's mummy-wrapped kid brother in "A Christmas Story."

Forgot only one thing _ sunscreen.
