Verdict: Bend over, Caractacus, there's a good Celt ***

SHOCK is the main thrust of Howard Brenton's Romans In Britain. By using the shock of violent sex and murder, the shock of brutal self-inquiry, the playwright hopes to tell us something dark about imperialism.

Mr Brenton's Romans, far from being spreaders of Gibbonesque values, are racist slashers, salters of peasant farmland. Cut, immediately, to scenes of the recent British Army in operation in Ulster.
