Thomas Cole wrote a letter describing a fictive dream to his friend and used this to recount his experience of painting one of his works, Dream of Arcadia. Another painting, The Architect's Dream, also alludes to contemporary literary and popular dream imagery. The work was a combination of reverie in the form of a dreaming figure and a grand architectural view.
