Holder (theology, Saint Anselm College) shows how some of the difficulties inherent in understanding Protestant pioneer Calvin's (1509-64) interpretation of the scripture can be more fruitfully addressed through a re-examination of the hermeneutics and exegesis, and especially the difference between them. He argues that Calvin's work is a grasping of the Christian religio re-framed for the mid-16th century, sets out edification as the heart of the theological task, and takes the search for God's truth as the driving force behind scriptural interpretation.
