'Without' was an exhibit curated by David Cannon Dashiell and Peter Edlund for Diverseworks in Houston, TX. The 15 artists who participated shared the theme of creating meditations on privation, absence and loss, in essence realizing the medieval terms for representations of death. Fortunately, they also managed to avoid pretensions and excess. However, some observers berated the inclusion of Therese Frare's photograph of a person dying of AIDS that was used in a Benetton ad, although the work certainly fit the show's tone. Most of the 15 other pieces are also discussed.
