Samarium-cobalt magnets that can operate at temperatures up to 550[degrees]C (1020[degrees]F) have reportedly been developed by Electron Energy Corporation (EEC), Landisville, Pa., with funding from the Missile Defense Administration. This temperature is beyond the range of conventional SmCo magnets and well above the 200[degrees]C (390[degrees]F) limit of neodymium iron boron.

EEC tailors alloys for its SmCo magnets with additives such as holmium, zirconium, manganese, erbium, gadolinium, iron, and copper.

The magnets have been designed specifically for traveling wave ...
