KENNETH KOCH, who died in 2002, was the major American comic poet of recent times. Always fresh, sometimes cheeky, he was an endearingly happy lyricist. That he was humorous does not diminish his status as a "serious" writer. No one would group him with the lightweight virtuosos--like Dorothy Parker, Ogden Nash or Phyllis McGinley--who churned out brief topical witticisms in old-fashioned forms from rather conservative perspectives.
