The European Commission yesterday approved a five-year action plan to improve animal welfare that includes tighter inspections on farms and more research to find alternatives to using animals to test medicines.

'The protection and welfare of animals is crucial, not least for ethical and moral reasons, but also to ensure animal health and the quality of food,' said European Union Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou.
