Is Van Duyn, the county's nursing home, worth saving? Yes, despite four years of fiscal distress. But how? The answer is not so clear.

For nearly 180 years, Onondaga County has maintained a home for the aged. The current Van Duyn Home & Hospital was built in the 1970s. Today, Van Duyn houses up to 526 elderly county residents at its airy, well-maintained facility alongside Seneca Turnpike. Among them are a disproportionate number of tough cases other nursing homes don't want - patients dealing with dementia like Alzheimer's disease.
