The Tal A'far district of the north-western province of Ninevah is a mixed Turkoman, Kurdish and Sunni Arab town some 150 miles north-west of Baghdad. It is held up by the American military as one of the success stories of the multinational forces (MNF) in Iraq. This time last year, the region was known as the "Falluja of the North" after it had become an important staging point for Neo-Salafi jihadis whom US commanders call "terrorists".
