The historic little town of Galena, Ill., always meets the holidays pre-decorated. It can't help itself. In any season, it looks like a red and green banner stretched out along the hills above its small river - red brick and green shutters, that is, and old porches trimmed in white-as-snow carpenter's lace.

Add pine garlands and twinkling lights - as the shops and guesthouses do every year - and you have Christmas. Or rather, I have it.
