Jan. 20--The first, misleadingly good scene of the new Albert Brooks film, "Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World," compares in quality to the "nest egg" ex-change in "Lost in America," or the "Defending Your Life" compilation of misjudgments.

Brooks, the writer-director, plays himself here. A casting agent has submitted him for a meeting with director Penny Marshall (also playing herself--who else could?) about a remake of the Jimmy Stewart vehicle "Harvey."
