A way from the masses of tourists that from spring to autumn abound within the inner city of Amsterdam, two smaller and less crowded towns offer picturesque canals that are a well known characteristic of the Dutch landscape. Though on a smaller scale than Amsterdam, Leyden and Delft have streets and houses that are reminiscent of the Dutch "golden age," the 17th century. And though they are not on the itinerary of the jet set, both are lively university towns.
Leyden is about 25 miles south of Amsterdam, Delft is another 15 miles further south just before Rotterdam. ...
