Public defenders seek more money to ease workload.

Jan. 12--The head of Kentucky's Department of Public Advocacy is worried that overworked public defenders could be sending innocent people to prison.

The defenders do not have enough time to spend on each case, said state Public Advocate Erwin Lewis, whose department is responsible for providing public defenders.

Public defenders in the commonwealth are handling nearly twice the number of cases that national standards suggest, according to a study done by the department.
