PEOPLE who wake after eight hours' sound sleep are less alert than those who have not slept for more than a day, a study shows.

After a good sleep, people were groggy, had impaired short-term memory and did worse at simple maths questions than those who faced extended sleep deprivation.

This "sleep inertia" could be "as bad or worse than being legally drunk", said Professor Kenneth Wright, who led the study.
