Andre Labarthe and Raymond Aron: political myth and ideology in 'La France libre.' (French Resistance publication during World War II)

From: Journal of European Studies | Date: March 1, 1993| Author: | Copyright information

Charles de Gaulle initiated 'La France libre' in London in 1940, and under the editorial stewardship of Andre Lebarthe and Raymond Aron the review flourished with upwards of 76,000 subscribers during the war. The journal's principle aims were to foster internal and external resistance to the German occupation of France, as well as to create a sense of renewal in French politics and culture. The rhetoric provided by Lebarthe and Aron was highly influential because of its reliance on logical reasoning over emotion.

The history of the monthly review, La France libre, deserves a special place ...
