Jan. 4--Even as Palm Beach County officials trumpeted Mecca Farms orange groves as the launching pad for a biotech boom, they counted on land-hungry homebuilders as insurance if the deal fizzled.

Development plans for Mecca Farms as well as the neighboring Vavrus Ranch called for as many as 11,000 homes -- along with research labs and room for spin-off businesses expected to come with The Scripps Research Institute.
