Habermas's theory of communicative rationality is best understood in the context of his theory of social action. The theory of social action is designed to answer two related questions: What makes social interaction possible? and, How is social order possible? While the questions are conceptually distinct, I believe Habermas offers a single answer to both of them. Coordinating social action (action that takes place between, at a minimum, two agents) and explaining social order are possible only if we can demonstrate the necessity for communicative action alongside strategic ...
