Since J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth, Beorhthelm's Son," (1) commmentary on The Battle of Maldon has focused on one word, sometimes almost to the exclusion of the rest of the poem. That word is, of course, ofermod. How one glosses the word, as any survey of the scholarship on the subject will demonstrate, determines to a great extent the reader's assessment of Byrhtnoth's heroism and leadership.
