It has frequently been noted that for poets, the ultimate precursor, model, and symbol of "the essence of poetry" is Orpheus. This certainly seems to be the case for Rainer Maria Rilke, whose celebratory Sonette an Orpheus (1922) often are read as a manifesto of Rilkean artistic self-understanding and poetic mission.
