Rumen bacteria rob cattle of nutrients.

Agricultural Research Service scientist James B. Russell helped identify three bacteria, found in cattle rumen, that cause the loss of up to 25% of cattle-feed protein. Russell's team also discovered that ionophores, antibiotics approved as cattle additives, can destroy the bacteria. Feedlot beef cattle administered monensin, one of the ionophores, generally exhibit an 8% growth-efficiency improvement.
