THE town of Yanan, tucked between the yellow hills of Shaanxi Province, is a symbol of the Communist Party's greatest pride and of its greatest embarrassment. This is where the Red Army took refuge from bombing raids at the end of the Long March, and where Chairman Mao made his home in a cave from 1937 to 1947. Yanan is the glorious cradle of China's revolution.
