APPROXIMATELY 90% of the flowering plants in the world are hermaphroditic in that the female and male reproductive organs are in the same flower (Ainsworth, 2000; Charlesworth, 2002). However, in some species, hermaphroditic flowers have evolved several mechanisms that increase cross-pollination, which avoids inbreeding depression and promotes heterozygosity, genetic variability, and genetic exchange (Dellaporta and Calderon-Urrea, 1993). These mechanisms include protogyny, chasmogamy, heterostyly, self-incompatibility, self-sterility, entomophily, anemophily, and hydrophily. ...
