Middle Eastern scholar and academic Albert Hourani died on Jan 17, 1993 after a distinguished career. Hourani, a Christian Lebanese by descent, was born in Manchester, England in 1915, was educated at Oxford University and began teaching in the 1930s. In 1948 he became a Research Fellow at Magdalen College, England, followed by various other academic assignments including director of the Middle East Centre at St Anthony's College, Oxford from 1959 until his retirement in 1971.
