Premium services cannot live by multiplexing alone. Nineteen months after its introduction as a marketing strategy, operators consider multiplexing an effective weapon in the war against pay cable churn only when used in conjunction with other tactics.

Launched with great fanfare by Home Box Office in August 1991 and adopted by Showtime in October 1991 and The Disney Channel a year later, plexing has potential as a churn-buster and retention tool, cable executives acknowledge.
