While studying the popular writing of the MacGowan sisters in the early 20th century, Switzer (English, Eastern Illinois U.) became curious whether the source Alice MacGowan thanked in her 1910 Civil War novel The Sword in the Mountains was still extant. Her uncle Hartzell (1837-1918) had been convinced by his family to write his life story in 1898, and his memoirs were indeed still in the family but otherwise unknown to the world. Excerpts recount in lively language his upbringing on an Ohio farm and his unexpected command of a company during the Civil War.
