Robert Moog, the man who invented the keyboard synthesizer and ushered in the era of electronic music, died on August 21 at his home in Asheville, North Carolina, of an inoperable brain tumor, detected in April. He was 71 years old. During a 50-year career designing and building instruments, Moog did more than any single individual to move electronic music into the mainstream.
