In the first century A.D., Herculaneum, named after the Greek hero Herakles (known to the Romans as Hercules), was a small town in the Roman Empire. Located on the Bay of Naples, on the southwest coast of Italy, it lay just south of modern-day Naples and just west of a volcano called Mount Vesuvius. Unlike nearby Pompeii, Herculaneum was not a busy commercial city, but a quiet seaside community.
