We pulled into a tiny beach on day nine to scout Crystal, one of the biggest and most notorious rapids in the Grand Canyon. Squinting in the harsh sun, we spent a long time trying to determine the best way through the succession of monstrous waves that bucked and boiled through the narrow gorge. The longer we stood there, the more impassable it appeared. My mouth was dry as we stumbled back to the boats and pushed out into the current.
