Garry Wills observes that the classics "are no longer vital to the culture" (modern secular culture), and he takes Sherod Santos's selection of Greek Lyric Poetry as a symptom of that decay ["Slop and Gossip," October 2005]. There is no question that we have lost the intimacy with the Greek and Latin poets that educated readers in the later Renaissance and the eighteenth century could assume.
