Abstract. -- Experiments were conducted to assess the effects of the insecticide carbaryl on proportion of time spent in activity (tail movement) and swimming speed of tadpoles of the Rio Grande Leopard Frog, Rana berlandieri. Tadpoles were exposed (0 to 96 h) to various concentrations of carbaryl (3.5, 5.0 or 7.5 mg/L), or to an acetone solvent control, or water control. No significant differences in behavior were observed between tadpoles of either control group. Time spent in ac...

A mathematical explanation of an increase in bacterial swimming speed with viscosity in linear-polymer solutions
Biophysical Journal ; ABSTRACT Bacterial swimming speed is sometimes known to increase with viscosity. This phenomenon is peculiar to bacterial motion. Berg and Turner (Nature. 278:349-351, 1979) indicated that the phenomenon was caused by a loose, quasi-rigid network formed by polymer molecules that were added to
Photosensitive Signal Transduction Induces Membrane Hyperpolarization in Paramecium bursaria
Photochemistry and Photobiology ; ABSTRACT The protozoan ciliate Paramecium bursaria exhibits membrane hyperpolarization in response to photostimulation, accompanied with an increased swimming speed. Speed Modulation in Swimming Frogs.
Journal of Motor Behavior ; ABSTRACT. Swimming movements of 7 European green frogs (Rana esculenta) were studied, starting from the detailed analysis of the speed and timing of the propulsive, glide, and recovery phases of their intermittent swimming behavior. Vertical Migration and Motility Responses in Three Marine Phytoplankton Species Exposed to Solar Radiation[dagger]
Photochemistry and Photobiology ; ABSTRACT Diurnal vertical migration in the water column and the impact of solar radiation on motility were investigated in three marine phytoplankton species: Tetraselmis suecica, Dunaliella salina and Gymnodinium chlorophorum. Cells were exposed to solar radiation either in ultraviolet radiation
Motility of Daphnia spinulata as Affected by Solar Radiation Throughout an Annual Cycle in Mid-latitudes of Patagonia[dagger]
Photochemistry and Photobiology ; ABSTRACT During an annual cycle, Daphnia spinulata collected from a plankton community of Patagonia was exposed outdoors to assess the impact of recently received solar radiation on motility (i.e. swimming speed and gravitaxis). Individual values of these parameters were obtained by video
