From the perspective of "realist" critics, American foreign policy is too often marred by a penchant for idealistic moralism (e.g., Larson 1966). This tendency toward moralism in foreign policy is frequently reflected in the rhetoric of presidents, as they seek to justify their stance toward other countries in the international arena--simply recall Ronald Reagan's description of the Soviet Union as the "Evil Empire" or George W. Bush's rhetoric in the wake of 9/11, describing various regimes as constituting an "axis of evil."
