Cairn Energy has been an exciting rollercoaster ride of an investment for shareholders. The Edinburgh-based company was founded by chief executive, Bill Gammell, and was first listed on December 22, 1988.

Originally, it was a small oil exploration company concentrating on the North Sea, but the board decided to change the company's focus in the mid-1990s and search for underdeveloped oil and gas assets.
