Being self-employed and working from home, as I did for the first six months of this year, can be a very spartan personal existence, especially after you have been working within organisations for the previous fifteen years and interacting with colleagues on a range of matters, even if it's is a pint after work.

However, an article in this month's Labour Market Trends, published by the Office for National Statistics, shows that whilst I was lonely, I was certainly not alone, as an estimated 3.1 million people in the UK worked mainly in their own home in 2005.
