For most of the '60s, Warren Beatty was a Hollywood juvenile working hard to get the movie industry to pay attention to more than just his dazzling smile. He'd already made interesting choices in early film appearances--a gigolo in Tennessee Williams's The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone, a sad boy in love with a stunning but unstable Natalie Wood in William Inge and Elia Kazan's Splendor in the Grass (both 1961)--but Beatty knew it would require a career-making move to get the kind of opportunities he craved.
