Sep. 30--VALLEY SPRINGS -- Katie Gore, 11, spoke with the confidence of a seasoned relief worker as she filled a backpack Thursday in the multipurpose room at Valley Springs Elementary School.

"We need a girl's toothpaste," Gore said as she moved down an impromptu production line.

Fellow relief worker Christian Demasters, 11, stationed by a bin of soap, brushes and shampoo, handed her a tube, and she slid it into a purple student backpack. That pack, bulging with pens, nutrition bars, art supplies and books, is being mailed along with 91 others ...
