Surveillance for and comparison of birth defect prevalences in two geographic areas - United States, 1983-88. (California; Atlanta, Georgia)

Data from the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program and the Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program were studied to compare the prevalence of birth defects in the two regions for the period 1983-88. The results indicated that the two regions reported different rates of birth defects such as encephalocele, spina bifida and arm/hand limb reduction. The number of spina bifida cases among whites in California, for example, was 250, compared to 79 in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The reasons for many of these differences were unknown.
