TAXONOMY may not be much fun, but it is fundamental. Until you can arrange the contents of the universe in categories, it is hard to say anything about them - as the astrophysicists who study gamma-ray bursts might attest. The satellite which has been providing them with most of their data for the past few years, NASA's gamma-ray observatory (GRO), sees a burst almost every day. In all of them a spot on the sky, hitherto unremarkable, suddenly pours out gamma rays. But some last a tenth of a second, some last ten seconds; some are bright, some are dim; some vary in brightness ...
