A growing number of Kane County jail inmates are being sent to downstate Jefferson County as the cheapest - though not necessarily most convenient - way to temporarily relieve crowding in the local adult lockup.

At the same time, leaders continue to try and hash out a new short-term agreement with McHenry County to guarantee a close-to- home option for some Kane County inmates until a new and bigger Kane County jail is built, likely in two to three years.
