Video theoretically is an ideal medium for transforming local area networks (LANs) into vehicles for multimedia communications networking, but the ability of LANs to carry video is negatively affected by bandwidth restrictions. Current LANs were not designed with multimedia capacities, and converting a LAN to a multimedia platform requires additional bandwidth. The set-up of a video LAN will be dictated by the application; extant LANs can handle straightforward applications, but real time applications might require bespoke conferencing and server software.
