THEY are what has come to be known in the poultry trade as a rhea guard action.

Standing at over 5ft, the exotic birds have been employed on a Scottish farm to act as minders for their distant cousin, the humble hen.

The rheas' role on the farm is straightforward - stand there and look mean enough to deter any foxes from even thinking about sneaking up on the poultry runs.
