The Korean War is America's "forgotten war." Few Minnesotans remember that this month marks the 55th anniversary of the Inchon landing.
This brilliant amphibious assault - conceived by Gen. Douglas MacArthur and launched on Sept. 15, 1950 - landed 70,000 men behind North Korean lines, splitting the North's military machine. The invasion force pushed on to liberate Seoul, South Korea's capital, on Sept. 29. The Inchon landing ultimately led to the preservation of South Korea as an independent nation below the 38th parallel.
