Notes Behind the News
The original pit bulls, called "bull and terriers," were a cross between a bulldog and an English black and tan terrier. They were bred as a leaner, more muscular replacement for bulldogs in dog fights. They were ideal for fighting because they were vicious toward other dogs in the ring, but not aggressive toward humans, making them easy to train. The dogs were so calm around children that they were nicknamed "nanny dogs."
