Advanced Cerametrics Inc (ACI), USA, says that it has developed a relatively cheap spinning process for producing flexible fibres made of piezoelectric ceramics.
Although the process can be used to spin fibres from a wide range of ceramics, the fibre identified as having the greatest commercial potential is lead zirconate titanate (PZT). The company is now supplying such fibres to US National Composite Center (NCC), Kettering, Ohio, in order to develop their use in a variety of advanced composites, such as so-called "smart" sensors and actuators.
